Jason Lai is a Speech-language Pathologist (SLP) specialising in motor speech, swallowing, voice disorders, as well as the assessment, pre-habilitation and rehabilitation of problems resulting from head and neck cancer and its treatment (Chemotherapy, Surgery, Radiation therapy). He also has extensive experience in supporting people diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, lung and other cancers with voice and swallowing difficulties. He has administered over a hundred instrumental swallowing assessments (Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing and Videofluoroscopic Study of Swallow) for inpatients and outpatients.
He has contributed to many key policy and launches of new in-patient services in local private hospitals. He launched the first inpatient oral-care service with the goal of preventing acquired pneumonia and improving the quality of life (QoL) in patients. He was qualified as the first PORi-certified Head and Neck Cancer Rehabilitation Therapist in Hong Kong, Macau, and mainland China in 2023. He subsequently launched the first local Hong Kong specialised speech therapy services for people diagnosed with head and neck cancer, focusing on the functional and quality of life maintenance and improvement in people diagnosed with head and neck cancer. In 2023, he accomplished, as the leading SLP, the first complete implementation of the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) in Hong Kong Adventist Hospital- Stubbs Road amongst all local Hong Kong hospitals. He further presented in the first Hong Kong IDDSI Symposium as an expert speaker on “Continuous Quality Improvement: Enhancing Swallowing Safety with Adequate Nutrition through the Dysphagia Diet Standardization” in 2024. He was invited as the guest judge in the 2024 CareFood cooking competition organized by the HKCSS. In 2020, he founded the charitable organization Aphasia HK and served as a founding executive committee member and speech therapist from 2020 to 2023. With support from the GIES and the HKEX Foundation, he promoted a series of social projects to support people with aphasia and their caregivers.
